Chesapeake National Recreation Area (CNRA)

Momentum continued to build in support for the Chesapeake National Recreation Area (CNRA). In June, U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes (D-MD) released key principles developed in collaboration with a working group that will guide the creation of a Chesapeake National Recreation Area (CNRA).

A public opinion poll in July showed profound support for National Park Service status for the Chesapeake, with 83% of Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., respondents in favor of establishing the CNRA.

The CNRA would be a collection of parks and other public lands in the Chesapeake Bay watershed that bring national and international attention to the Bay’s significant natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources. Formally connected through partnerships between the National Park Service and communities and states, these parks would become the CNRA and tell a consistent narrative about the nation’s largest estuary and one of the world’s largest environmental restoration efforts.
