Working to Establish the New Southern Maryland Woodlands National Wildlife Refuge
Chesapeake Conservancy is a core member of the coalition of partners known as the Southern Maryland Conservation Alliance, which is calling for the establishment of an expanded National Wildlife Refuge System presence in southern Maryland. Featuring extensive forest land, numerous streams, wetlands and swamps and fertile soil, southern Maryland encompasses one of the most important ecological regions in Maryland and in the Chesapeake Bay. As proposed, the new refuge would conserve up to 40,000 acres of land from willing sellers in five counties over the next 30 years: Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s.
